As far as we know the timing chain should last longer than the piston rings ~~ 300,000 miles if you follow the 90 day old change interval.

Check all fuel lines, but especially the ones connecting to the fuel rail when cold.

I have the same issue of smelling gas when I have the fan running.Only thing that was leaking was my hood shocks completely shot leaking out gas. So when I have the fan running it sucks the gas fume through the windshield vent. I smell them in the car not under the hood.Check if your hood shocks are leaking.

Hood shocks and suspension shocks use odorless Nitrogen gas as the charge element.

Yup, check the under plenum fuel lines. Also look around the injectors for leaking gas. I've pulled the plenum off and a few months after finishing that job (replaced about every other hose while in there), a fuel line under there started seeping a bit when it's cold outside.

Good score, how many miles on it. Any warranty left on it?

I cannot thank you all enough for all that information.Unfortunately, there is no warranty left. I found this car on ebay two years ago at a dealership (mom and pop) that was closing. So hold on to your socks 36k(sorry miss quote earlier) for $18500.00. I ran a car fax and completed an audit (tracking down the previous owner) and all checked out. I also had the car checked out by the local Infiniti dealer and the mechanic said if I did not buy this car, he would. was offered more money than I purchased the car for but I was in love the moment I drove the car and the love for this car has not diminished.

Nice score good price. As everyone said you never need to worry about the timing chain, it is a chain not a rubber belt.

As for the gas smell, that would worry me a bit. Nissan had HUGE issues with gas leakage back in the 90's after MTBEs came into gas and the old VG 3.0 engines began to light on fire. I had a 85' Maxima which leaked and the Previous owner had a small fire and he replaced the injectors at his cost. Than I got a recall notice for my 84' 300zx and in 96' Nissan finally admited up to it and gave my Z a brand new set of injectors at their cost and paid me for the work on the Maxima (I ended up replacing those injectors later). I would for sure have it checked out, you wouldn't want it to light on fire, find a good aftermarket mechanic and have it checked out, don't just blow it off. YOu can save all that $$$ not having to service timing belts very 60k like our friends with LS400's have to.
