Hello,
I’m in the process of replacing my timing belt on my pathfinder. I’ve read several post and the instructions from the service manual. The problem is I can’t seem to find a punch mark for the crankshaft. The service manual states to set the #1 piston to TDC and line up the punch mark on the outside of the oil pan. I can’t seem to find a punch mark anywhere in the area. The left and right cams have their respective punch marks but nothing for the crank. Any ideas? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I’m at a loss.

It seems the cam doesn’t have a punch mark, at least on the 2000.

For simplicity and to be sure for re assembly
Take pictures with a digital camera
Mark things with a bright coloured permanent ink marker to relate things that come off to the block.
Before dis-assembly if you are having difficulty with marks, line ups rotate the crank until you have a feel of not much load, where the pistons are midway, when happy with that position DO NOT MOVE THE ENGINE FROM NOW ON UNTIL ALL BELTS ARE REPLACED. Mark everything as to relation to the block.

Remember when removing the timing belt the 2 banks may be under load of spring valves and can cause movement. But during assembly of a new belt be sure to rotate any cam side back to your marks that you put on.

You may want to lock each cam into position as you work the belt off.

Take your time, think it through then do.

Thanks ARKQX33V6, I just successfully finished this job and I agree with you that you should definetely take your time.

After replacing the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, bypass hose, upper/lower radiator hoses, belts, and spark plugs I spent around $300 in parts. I figure I saved around $700 for the same job at a shop since I was getting quotes for around $700 for just the timing belt and water pump.

This is not a difficult job but it was definitely tedious and time consuming. I started last Friday and just finished today (Thursday) working 2 to 5 hours in the evenings. The service manual is helpful but lacks procedural detail.

For parts, definitely shop around and ask for any and all discounts. I found that simply inquiring saved me a lot. Also, I'd like to give credit to O'Reilly auto parts for loaning me tools (which they regularly do) which saved me from buying a crank pulley. Good luck!

Can anyone please advise the part # for the above mentioned "bypass hose". I'm doing the timing belt on my truck and would like to do all that has been mentioned above but can't find the bypass hose in the Courtesyparts.com online catalog. Thanks in advance.

mine doesn't have the punch mark for the crank either
you can count the number of teeth on the belt between the punch marks , the service manual lists those, since I don't remember the numbers exactly I'm not gonna give them now.
