Hello everyone,

About a week ago my wife's 2000 Pathfinder started stuttering at cruising speed when accelerating (i.e. when speeding up to pass someone). The other morning I went to take it to work, and it stalled out when I was pulling out of the driveway, like it was out of gas.

It will crank up just fine, and when easy on the throttle its runs normally. But when I accelerate rapidly, it will stutter and stall.

The spark plugs look to be in good shape, and I changed the fuel filter today. I've also added Seafoam to the gas and have been running that for 1/4 tank, but the stalling still happens.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your help!!!

Try cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body to begin with.

Question: is it a 3.5L engine on it? and tell me if it happens when you surpass 3000RPM

In either case, it happened to my 2005 maxima after i took to the mechanic and turned out that the MAF sensor and the throttle body was not attached properly which made the car stall (mechanic's fault).

So in your case i would say start from there, maybe your throttle body needs a good clean. Not a huge deal!!!!

2001 was the changeover year for the 3.5L engine. His 2000 is a 3.3L.

Check timing at idle and high speed, must advance
Check EGR may be carbon fouled
Remove throttle feed conduit and check throttle plate movement and position vs. TPS
Clean air filter
Test TPS and confirm movement. The connectors wear
Open distributor and dust off the slit disc and clean the LED and receiver, clean the underside of cap
Are you getting strange MIL code numbers

Test spark plug grounds and gaps, too big a gap = problems
Verify idle speed is correct 750 RPM

Can you rev engine at temperature from idle to + 2500 RPM with no miss, hesitation?

Today:

Cleaned MAF sensor and TB
Checked timing, was around 17 at idle
Replaced distributor cap/rotor
New air filter
Seafoamed through vacuum line

Problem remains...

It will rev above 2500rpm, if I do it slowly. If I give it alot of throttle, it will hesitate and cut off (not every single time though). Idles smooth at 750rpm. It has yet to throw a code!

Will be changing the spark plugs and wires tomorrow. How do you check the EGR?

Thanks for the input guys!

Gasoline flow and pressure from fuel filter and rail? If all is well as a guess the transistor switching may be breaking down.

Rodney,
I know this is an old problem for you but My 200 pathfinder just started doing the very same thing. Did you resolve the issue? How? Thank you
Buddy

Sounds like you're not getting enough gas when stepping on the accelerator.
Supply is not meeting demand.
I had this problem years ago in a Chrysler mini-van.
Fuel pump was weak, and could not keep up with demand.
New fuel pump fixed the problem.
