Hi,

Hoping someone here can help me. I have a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder with the 3.3L engine. The fuel pump has gone out and I need to replace it. I accessed the hatch under the driver side back seat. The plastic plate under the inspection plate has outlets for 2 hoses. Looking down into the fuel tank itself, there are 2 small black hoses running between the relay and the pump.

Here's the problem. When I got the replacement pump however, there was only 1 hose and the electrical connection. So I'm baffled. Every picture of a replacement pump on the web shows a single hose, not 2 like on the one currently installed.

I can't afford to have a mechanic do it so if anyone can provide some guidance, an explanation, or what I need to hook up to what I'd really appreciate it. Sorry for the non-technical description. When (and if) I get it done I'll do a write up with pictures and post it here.

Thanks,
Mike

FE-5 and 6 of the FSM also shows 2 hoses. I looked at all the ones on RockAuto and they only have one hose. Odd, I'm not sure how to explain the difference.

Thank you so much for the replies! 96 Pathy, I'll get pictures tonight. Towncivilian, that's the exact problem I'm running into. The following schematic shows my sending unit and pump exactly:

Note the 2 fittings listed as "Fuel Gauge" in the schematic, and the 2 hoses and connectors that come up from the fuel pump. Every fuel pump I find just has one fitting for one hose.

I talked to 2 mechanics yesterday as this is my daily driver and I need to get this done. One wanted $700 to replace the pump. :ohno: All I can think is he was thinking he needs to drop the whole fuel tank which is unnecessary. The other guy didn't seem to enthusiastic on taking on the job so I think it's on me. I'll post more info when I get home and have some pictures. Thank you again for your helpl!

Mike

Looking at this exploded parts diagram:

It looks like one of the hoses is for the fuel tank return. Perhaps it's meant to be reused? It looks that way, given that even an OEM fuel pump has one hose attached.

Be sure you replace the O-ring pictured and torque everything to spec. If you'd like an exact OEM part number, provide your VIN and I'll look it up.

If you haven't yet, download a copy of the factory service manual. To save a copy of the FSM, right click -> Save As on every PDF, save them into a single folder, then use fwd.pdf to navigate.

I'd also suggest giving the general information thread a skim at your leisure at some point.

Welcome to NICO, by the way. :)
