Hi,

I have a 2000 Pathfinder and have just replaced the distributor (did this carefully, marking original position etc.). The car idles well and seems to be running well.

My question is - should I still check the ignition timing with a timing light (I don't own one so would have to buy one)? I thought I read somewhere that the ECU automatically adjusted the timing but maybe this is more of a fine tuning?

Thanks,

John

The ECU does manage the degree of advance of the ignition timing and getting the INITIAL advance set correctly is important. Even if you don't have a timing light you'll know you're at the correct initial timing setting if your idle speed with the engine fully warmed is correct. If you marked the distributor position when you removed it and it runs fine now then you have nothing to worry about.

Hi, Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks very much for your reply. I thought I had read that somewhere else so you confirming it allowed me not to have to go out and buy a timing light!

Cheers,

John
