The cassette player in my 2000 Pathfinder suddenly stopped working while in use one month ago. I had a cassette adapter in it and was playing music when it began making weird clicking noises for about 5 seconds before spitting the adapter out. I have tried actual tapes and experience the same problem so I know it isn't just an adapter problem. The CD player and radio both work great so it's just the cassette player. Has anyone experienced this problem before or have any idea as to what the problem may be/how to fix it? I found a replacement radio on eBay for roughly 60-; would it be cheaper to replace the whole thing or should I try and fix it? Thanks for your help!

Well, that's a 15 year old tape deck, it's amazing that it's lasted this long. I've had several fail, but that's ancient history. Not worth trying to repair. If you find a working one on ebay, just swap it out.

You can buy a straight replacement unit on eBay or something, but you may end up with the same problem soon. Even if you want the new deck to have a tape slot, there are plenty of aftermarket options out there. Most of them will even have an ⅛" and/or USB inputs.

If you're looking to keep the OEM unit (avoiding gaudy blue lights, avoiding theft, higher quality buttons, consistent look with rest of the interior) and want an aux input, you may also be able to keep the deck you have now and bypass the tape adapter by making your own aux input!
