Hi there, I was driving yesterday and my xterra felt like it was missing or bogging down and then died out. It will start back up but after 5 to 6 minuteds the engine dies. Any ideas out there? Help me!!!!

Sounds like a sensor but there really isn't enough info to tell from that. Is it throwing codes?

No expert here but, could be your fuel filter. Maybe its clogged. You didnt leave much info, could be a number of things. If you havent changed the fuel filter recently, you may wanna do that anyway. Real easy if you dont mind being on your back for a few minutes.

That description doesn't really give us much to go on so I have to agree with the other responses. A fuel filter will get dirty inside over time and prevent adequate fuel flow. The engine will usually sputter and then quit.

The fuel filter is located in front of the fuel tank behind a small steel splash shield. The filters are inexpensive and if you don't want to do it yourself a shop charge will run around $30-$40.00 + the filter.

The other thing that could be going is the fuel pump itself. These are located inside the fuel tank and can't be repaired. (They can only be replaced) The pump is accessed through a panel under the rear passenger seat cushion. The pump is quite expensive and they can go bad with no warning.

A computer scan would be a good idea too.

Have your local dealer run the VIN for recalls. The most common problem is the sender corroding. If it has the RO401/RO402 campaign outstanding then get it done. When this happens heat buildup in the tank will let it start and die.

Mine did that also. Changed the fuel filter twice still won't stay running turned out to be a sensor in the distributer Very expensive. $175 for the first tow & filter then $560 for the second round.
