2000 Nissan Quest and a Back Door Issue

Hey all,

I'm brand new here and I have an issue with my Quest.

So, tonight we found out that the right side of the back door won't latch right in order to have the dome lights turn off. We've never had this issue before and have had the van for about two years now.

I read somewhere about "pulling the latch forward" but that didn't work. When I close the door and then lift (not by the handle but the area around it) it's obvious that it didn't latch all the way and then there's the inside lights that are still on.

I ride my bike to work, but we live in Alaska and we're getting close to a time when that may not be possible soon. Any help you all can offer would be greatly appreciated. The light still wasn't turning off before I gave up and pulled the fuse...in case that didn't make it obvious, I'm a noob at cars regrettably (unless that was a smart thing to do, lights are off, theoretically my battery won't completely die, then woohoo).
