Before you replace anything, though, try lubricating the tracks with some white lithium grease. Sometimes that's all it takes to bring a sunroof back to life.

What did you discover? My 2001 sunroof has aquired similar habits. I am hoping it is a switch verses motor problem. The two switches (slide and pop up) produce the same intermittant function - they now appear to be interlocked. The auto slide open and close does not function. I have to hold and release the slide switch for each approx 3 inches in either direction. And when the roof reaches the closed position it continues over to the pop up function without touching the pop up switch. I have to carefully and 'manually' align the 'close' to prevent leaks. As well, when the pop up switch is engaged the function carries over to the open slide function.

Yeah my sunroof is doing the same exact thing, i tried the tip that MinisterofDOOM gave me, i greased the hell out of the track and move the sunroof back and forth about 5 to 6 times but i had no success (thanks anyways MinisterofDOOM the tracks did need greasing), i also read on some other forum that disconnecting the battery completey(pos and neg) that it would reset the motor but that didnt work either. Its just weird that both sunroof buttons are providing the same function??? Does anyone else have any other suggestions, should i go with less expensive route and replace the switch first???

I had the EXACT same problem on my 00 I30 - I disconnected the battery (as I found out here) and that took care of the problem - for a while. But, later, I had the SES light on and had the codes checked at Autozone - they gave me the code and cleared the light - but after that incident, the sunroof gave me that same problem! Fast forward to this past weekend - I had to get a new battery after nearly being stranded by a dead battery and after the new one got installed (and re-set the radio pre-sets) VOILA - the sunroof worked again (and is still working, FWIW).

So I would try this "disconnect the battery" solution before I would put $$ into a fix...

Only 15-20 minutes - this fixed the problem and it hasn't returned, FWIW...

Good luck!!

NOTE that you'll have to re-set your radio pre-sets and your trip odometer will re-set to 0. So I filled up with gas within a mile or so of doing the battery thing, so that I was still pretty accurate with my mileage!

...gtgreg got it right!!!! Thanks gtgreg! I was more than happy to reset my radio stations while I opened and closed the sunroof at will. Disconnecting the battery was the answer.
