I have a 2000 Maxima that has been overheating on long trips. It has happened the last two times I have driven for more than 5 hours. Each time, the engine started to overheat after 4-4.5 hours of driving. I can turn on the heater and the engine temp will drop back down to normal.

In the past year, I've replaced the thermostat, starter, from axels and spark plugs. I have also flushed the coolant system and I have plenty of coolant.

Any ideas as to what would cause this overheating? Thanks!

Have you replaced the coolant temp sensor? These things can really play havoc with your car if they are malfunctioning. Although usually it would overheat sooner I would think if that was the problem. Then again if you are at highway speeds the whole time, that would slow down the overheating process, same with turning on the heat.

Usually overheating is the result of a worn out and dirty radiater, assumming the fans are functioning as new..........What dies dealership say after a paid diagnosis.

Nissan uses thermostats that fail to work in winter causing low heat not summer overheats.

I'll check the radiator...thanks.

The dealership couldn't tell me anything because they couldn't duplicate the problem.
