Just bought a 2000 Maxima and there is no check engine light on. When you start the car in the morning is cranks right up but will starting sputtering and rpms will drop and eventually car will go dead. You can hold the car and car will stay alive. You have to do this about 3 or 4 times then the car will start and idle/run as smooth as can be. For the rest of the day the car is fine. Next morning same process all over again. I just got this car so I am not sure what to do because there are no codes. Any ideas?

IACV(Intake Air Control Valve)?MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor)?

what grade of gas are you using??

have u BG44K fuel system cleaner in it, if not, you should!!

check all your vacuum lines for loose or leaking lines.

when was the last time you replaced your engine air filter?

Just replaced MAF yesterday and have drove car about 100 miles since. Car has a lot more power now but still has a rough idle when started cold. This morning it went dead 3 times before I got it running. Once I got it running car is fine. Can stop and start car with no issues. Air filter is good I check it yesterday.

Why I thought MAF was problem is when car is idling rough and about to go dead you can disconnect MAF and car comes back to life and idles smoothly.

I did run some seafoam cleaner through the car also and filled the car with 93 oct gas.

faulty coolant temp sensor?

Leaky injectors? Any signs of running too rich? (gasoline smell, fouled plugs, black exhaust)
