I am wondering how tough it is to replace my mass air flow sensor on my 2000 Maxima. I am a shade tree mechanic at best however it doesnt look too hard. I had a mechanic clean it a year ago which worked well, but the problem is occuring again. I do use a k&n oiled filter which i am reading is a bad idea on this car. Any tips to help change this thing out would be GREAT Thanks artikat1

Welcome to NICO!

The MAF is very easy to replace. Just undo the electrical connector to the MAF. Unbolt the MAF from the air intake (clamp on one side, 4 bolts on the other). And install the new MAF.

My recommendation would be to remove the MAF and clean it with electrical contact cleaner. See if that doesn't help. K&N filters are easy to over oil.

scott, thanks for the advice, I was a little nervous to mess with it, but it looks pretty easy just as you described it...artikat10

just a thought, it might not be the MAF. i should make an article about this. most of the time (on VQ30DE/DE-K) the problem is NOT the MAF. it is actually the connector that is plugged into the MAF. this is especially relevant if you have a SRI, WAI, or CAI. the difference in motion causes the red wire to become loose over time, thus allowing a bad connection. check into that, if it's loose, solder it back to get a better connection. i did this 1.5 years ago after going through 4 MAFs. I have had no trouble out of it since. once i found the real problem, i felt like poo. find out what's up and let us know.
