Let's put it in proper perspective. What you get from Napa are refurbished MAF sensors. And you have to turn over the old MAF sensor (core) to get a lower price. From the dealer, you get brand new one so it's more expensive (and you keep your old sensor). It's like buying a new car vs. a used car. In the used car scenario, you also have to trade-in your old car to get a lower price. Also, the part for 95-99 Maxima (96-99 I30) is different and more expensive than 00-01 Maxima (00-01 I30). Here is the price comparison:

MAF Sensor for 95-99 Maxima/96-99 I30, P/N: 22680-31U00 (old), 22680-31U05 (new)Napa (refurbished): $258 less $50 for core = $208IoS-infinitipartsUSA.com (new): MSRP @ $562, discounted price @ $450OnLine (aftermarket, refurbished, etc): >$200

MAF Sensor for 00-01 Maxima/00-01 I30, P/N: 22680-AD200 (original), 22680-AD201 (alternate)Napa (refurbished): $119 less $55 for core = $64IoS-infinitipartsUSA.com (new): MSRP @ $488, discounted price @ $384OnLine (aftermarket, refurbished, etc): >$90

If you are resourceful enough, you can just buy the sensing element instead of the whole MAF meter assembly (housing, sensor, o-ring, connector., etc). For the 00-01 Maxima, the sensor alone, P/N: 22680-2Y001 is @ $78 from IoS. Just be very careful during the installation as the sensing element can easily get damaged.

So it's really up to the consumer which one to buy - new or rebuilt. But given the price difference and age of our cars. I myself would buy the part from Napa.

do you have to go to the dealer to have the ECU or something reprogrammed when you replace the MAF?

In most applications, no. The ECU should be able to relearn the new MAF sensor signal over time. If you want, you can reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery -5/15/30 minutes or more depending on the car model, or just leave it disconnected overnight. Most newer cars, 2000 and beyond, have a reset procedure using a combination of ignition switch ON/OFF and depressing /releasing the gas pedal for a given time frame while checking the status of the CEL.

With a new MAF sensor, drive on city streets normally for several minutes then on an empty highway/road, do some accelerations/WOTs and start-stop to allow the ECU to relearn the shifting points.

Some new MAF sensors has intructions that it need ECM reprogramming depends on the part number. So, better check w/ your Nissan dealer. Make sure u got a good oem air filter too.
