I have a 2000 Maxima GXE with 99k miles. Starting a few days ago, I have been having trouble starting my car.

1. The car cranks normally every time I turn the key.

2. It refuses to catch and start about 2/3 of the time.

3. This happens when it is a cold start, or after it is has been running for a while. Basically no realtion to cold/warm start.

4. I have tried my backup key and it did not make a big difference (I thought maybe security key chip was culprit).

5. I changed the battery yesterday at a shop- no difference.

6. No codes. No check engine light.

7. Once the car is started, there is no hesitation, loss of power, stalling. It runs great once it starts.

I have read through various posts and thought of the following:A) Ignition relay/coil - I am not sure what the symptoms would be, plus I thought this would trigger a code.B) Ignition module - same as above.C) fuel pump/relay - Maybe, but wouldn't I also get stalling or loss of power once it is running?D) crank postion sensor - possible. I have heard this will fail to trigger a code sometimes.E) camshaft position sensor.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have a 99 GXE with 58K on it and this morning it will not start either. For the past couple of months it would only start 2/3 of the time, just like your car. What it would do (when it didn't want to crank) was I would turn the key, and nothing would happen at all, just the accessories would turn on. The starter would not even click. Then I would try again and usually it would start fine. But this morning when I turn the key, nothing at all. And now it will not start. When it was "hesitating" to start before I first though ignition coil, and still think thats the problem. I am probably going to have it looked at this afternoon, if I find out what it is I will let you know. It sounds like we have a similar problem.

Have any of you guys resolve your ignition issue? I have the same issue as op with 5k more miles on same car. My cel is on and gave me a code of P0135 which is o2 sensor, but this JUST came on.

A faulty O2 sensor will not cause a starting problem. It's not even used until the engine warms up and ECU goes in close-loop. Check the battery voltage. A good battery must have 12.6 VDC or higher. At 12.5VDC, the battery is marginal and any voltage less than 12 VDC is a 'dead' battery. Please check the battery connectors (clean and tight) and cables (no corrosion), especially the one going to the starter. The alternator, if running, must have >13.8VDC (spec is 14.1-14.7 VDC).

Check/clean the main engine harness ground cables (2 ea) usually mounted close to the intake manifold; just follow the main harness and look for wires bolted to the engine frame). Disconnect the MAF sensor (this will trigger a P0100 code which can be reset) and see if the engine starts. If the engine started, you have a bad MAF sensor and must be replaced. Do not drive the car with MAF sensor disconnected (limp mode with all plugs and injectors firing simultaneouslly and RPM limited to <3000).

It's also possible to have a clogged fuel filter (for your car, the filter is with the fuel pump assembly in the tank). Check if the spark plugs are firing.

I had a similar issue with my 2k2 maxima....battery showed 13.x volts but was not supplying enough amps to crank the car. New battery solved the problem.

Could be a starter problem as well.....
