2000 Maxima, Auto problem, very annoying.

I have owned my 2000 maxima for quite some time now, and i have always had this annoying problem. When i start my car it makes it loud noise for a second, and then sometimes it does not want to get into gear (I am an automatic) but the shifter doesn't move. I push the button and it just stays. I have to keep pressing it and moving it around and finally, after 5-7 mins. It will go into Drive. I noticed the sound and the shifter both mess up mostly when its cold out. Hope that helps. Please someone give me a suggestion. This is my first topic, sorry its long. /thank you

Have you taken apart the console or looked at the shifter linkage to see if there is any obvious problems with it?
