I just traded cars and have a 2000 I 30 with 160,000 highway miles. It has been well maintained, but I am having a frustrating problem. When the engine is cold, it starts right up. But as I do errands and turn it off and on it catches but has difficulty staying "on" unless I depress the gas pedal. Ugh! Any ideas before I head out to the mechanic? Oh, forgot to mention that I did search active and archived posts. Thanks!

I appreciate any help. I did search recent and archived posts and didn't find my problem. I just got a 2000 I30 with 160,000 highway miles. It has been well maintained but I'm having a frustrating problem. When the engine is cold, it starts right up. But as I do errands, the engine catches but won't stay on. I can give it a little gas, in a fine dance I'm learning to do, but want to know what could be the problem BEFORE I take it to a mechanic. Thank you!

*EDIT* I merged these threads since it was moved here (repost). -Noah-

Is your check engine light on?

It sounds like it could be an EGR problem, but that would normally set a code.

The fail safe answer, is it your MAF? It doesn't sound like a MAF problem, but when It runs poorly and has no code, 8 out of 10 times it's the MAF.

No check engine light is on. Any other ideas? thanks! Also, what's a "MAF" problem? I'm a rookie!

MAF is the Mass Airflow sensor. They have been known to be a problem on A33s IIRC.

Does the car give you problems, when it's cold and you rev it up?
