Hi, everyone

I got a problem with my 2000 i30. First, I was getting codes P01731, 32, so I replaced the shift solenoid pack and TPS. Seems to have fixed those codes (if you need help diagnosing/testing the solenoid pack or TPS, message me).

I recently bought the car for cheap, so I knew it would need serious work. Now, I'm dealing with 1.5k rpm limit and sputtering (intake backfire); you can hear like popcorn popping when you try to rev the engine over 1.5k rpm.

Am I dealing with a faulty MAF sensor here? I tested it and it came within specs, so I'm out of luck.

Car seems to run fine at idle, just when you step on the gas, car won't go and it starts making popcorn noise. It feels like having a popcorn machine for engine under the hood, lol.

It doesn't seem like it has any visible vaccuum leaks. Thanks for your input

By the way, car doesn't stall when MAF sensor is unplugged. No engine codes (only P0100 when MAF is unplugged).

I'd check all the wiring going to the TPS and check out the IACV (functionality and vacuum leaks).
Should be able to find everything you need in this section of the FSM. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Maxima/2001/EC.pdf

The backfiring almost leads me to think it may be timing issue. Check the timing ring on the crank pulley for any damage. Any issues with the crank or cam sensors should throw a code.

Well, I replaced the TPS. I just need to adjust it to specs.

Actually I got a code for the IAC valve earlier today. It was P0505 and that appeared just once. I deleted the code, drove the car around and that code hasn't reappeared.

Backfiring definitely seems like an ignition timing issue. How do you adjust timing?

Can a bad MAF sensor cause the popcorn issue?

I had a 98 i30 and I replaced the MAF sensor. I clearly remember the symptoms. For this 2000 i30, I don't know; I'm skeptical it could be the MAF sensor.

Right, I saw you replaced the TPS, that's why I said to check the wiring.

The ECU controls the timing based on the inputs it receives (crank sensors, cam sensors, knock sensors, etc).

If the MAF is bad it goes into fail safe and limits the car to 2k rpms, so it is possible that's your issue.

Thanks for your response.

UPDATE: I replaced MAF sensor, and popcorn machine went away. Car drives and feels MUCH MUCH smoother. Now I'm getting P0505 code constantly and still rev limit to 1.5k or 2.5k. Cleaning throttle body ASAP.
