One (or more) of my ignition coils is bad. I'm somewhat mechanical and I've heard that they are easy to fix. So I guess I've got two questions: What is the best way to isolate exactly which coil is bad? (it misfires and runs poorly about 2 times a day now)...and how do I change them? Where are they located?

Just not very familiar with this car...

Thanks for your help.

Our cars have a coil on plug design so it's pretty easy. To test the coils when it is miss firing, just unplug each coil one at a time. When you find the one that doesn't affect the engine, that's your bad coil/plug. As for replacing them, it's just a matter of removing one or two screws, popping the old ones off and putting the new ones on (ideally with some dielectric grease).

There is also a TSB out on the coils for the 00-01 Maxima if I remember correctly. One set of coils had a grey dot on them, but I can't remember at the moment if those are the bad ones, or the replacement ones.

Thanks very much for your help. At Advance Auto Parts, the coils are about $89 each. Is that a good price or do you have vendors where I can get the coils for cheaper?

Autozone pulled the codes for my 00 Max and said it was the number 4 cyl.So, I bought a plug and coil pack. Checked for spark on old, then new, then replaced the coil pack. Seems like they were 79. Had heard that the coil packs with the dots were the good ones....that what I have. Pretty sure that packs for the back bank are different than the front. Get the right one.Good Luck!

Well i purchased a set of aftermarkets, engine seems to be running fine, but good ol check engine light is on now. I guess the stupid ecu doesnt like the coils, its complaining bout the ignition, of course nissan says the aftermarkets are the problem if they changum out it will be 1g.Dats ok, looks like i have somemore troubleshootin to do. If not will be returning the aftermarkets. Anyone know of any deals for the genuine nissan coils? Im not payin $100+ a piece for um.Thanks for any help.

i know this is an old topic but i have a 96 with a bad skip.. I was testing the coils, you know unplugging them one by one and seeing which one it was. Turns out the the left rear coil when facing towards the car from the front is bad.. I have no check engine light on tho but that coil definitely made no difference when unplugging it.. any ideas????? thanx

if that one made no difference and unpluging the rest did then it's bad and needs to be replaced. however, the fsm (i believe) says when one coil goes bad you should replace all of them. idk if it's nissans way to make more money or if replacing just the bad one is a good fix.

Pull the plug to make sure the gap is correct and that there is no debris on the electrode before you replace the coil. A bad plug is far cheaper than a new coil. If you can't tell if the plug or the coil is bad, swap the coil with the one next to it and see if the miss stays with the coil or the plug.

I would check the resistance of the old coil AND thenew coil you are replacing it with.

The old coil might be ok. if it checks out electrically whybuy the new coil?

ok when i got to work today i tried switching the coil with the cylinger right next to it.. no difference, the skip didnt follow.. so i pulled the plug from the original one and checked the compression.. about 130. i then pulled the plug from the cylinder right next to it and switched then and still no difference... is this cylinder dead or somethin.. nothing is making any difference switching plugs or coils from known good cylinders...please any help?

Standard compression is 185psi, minimum compression is 142psi. Sounds like it's an internal problem.

could it be a bad injector?

An injector problem would likely trigger a check engine light.

Nissan recommends replacing all of them at once because they seem to fail at about the same time frame. We've got customers at our dealership that have replaced every one, one by one, over the course of a year. It saves a lot of hassle to just go ahead and replace them all at once.
