There has been a random rattle near my front wheel for a couple weeks. This morning wwhile going over a few bumps there was a bang like a rock got caught up near my wheel. Then when I was going to park I put the car in reverse, it was reversing and then there was a grinding noise as if I was scrapping against the curb. I pulled forward a bit, then reversed again. I was able to revers a bit more, but then that same grinding sound came back and actually stopped the car from reversing. I gave it a but of throttle just to see, and it seemd as if the car rocked back a but but wouldn't reverse anymore.

I was close enough to the curb that I just parked the car and went into work.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Manual or automatic? If auto, check to see if your transmission control solenoids are still properly connected?

Rock-grinding-on-metal sound could be a failed gear, but that's (relatively) unlikely.

Its Automatic

And rock-grinding-on-metal would be the best description for it.

I am getting off work soon and will have a look soon. Maybe I will take off the front left tire to see if I can get a good look.

Sounds like you broke a halfshaft. Get under there and see what's going on. Take pics if you can so I can see any visible damage.

Bit more info

The car will reverse a bit, but then it grinds to a halt as if something gets caught that prevents it from moving back further. If I put it in park, you can sometimes hear a popping noise from somewhere under the hood, and then the car will move back a little furter. SOmetimes, turning the wheel seemed to cause the popping noise too. Putting the car in Park didn't always work, so I would drive forward a bit, and then reverse a little more. This allowed me to slowly mve the car back

Now, one other thing I noticed is I took off the front left wheel where I heard the original noise. I was missing one of the 2 bolts on the calliper. I could actually pull the lower part of the calliper off of the rotor as it was hanging free. Could this be what is causing the issue?

Driving forward seems to be no problem, as I drove home. There seemed to be some rattle from the front calliper being loose

Thanks

Could be. If the brake is sticking when you back up, it may be powerful enough to stop the car. Wether or not that is the problem, you NEED to fix it. If you fix that, and it still has a problem, post it. If that fixes it, let me know!

Does anyone know where I would be able to find a new Main pin bolt or Torque fixing bolt? Are these a specific size component that I can find at any auto shop?

Thanks

I want to say that it is a 12M bolt. I could be wrong, but I would take the one off the other side of the car, and use it for comparison. Get one that is equal length, width, and thread matching. Make sure that the head of the bolt is the same, since that may play a major role in fittment. If you can't find one at a local auto parts shop, best bet will be the stealership. It'll probably cost around $10. from Nissan.

Are you referring to the one that holds the brackt to the knuckle or the one that holds the caliper to the bracket?

The bracket to knuckle is 21mm and the one for caliper to bracket is 14mm.

going off of page 5 of FSM book ax on the 2000 I30, I would say it is the caliper connecting to the braket, however it looks like it is all named the knuckle on that page.

So if I go under the hood infront of the driver side wheel. I can see that the bolt for the caliper furthest from me, but closest to where the drive shaft connects is missing.

I took a picture, but then my camera died

Sorry took awhile to figure out how to post a picture. I am guessing this is the bracket to the knucle as I checked the other side and it was larger then 17mm. Is there a source that will tell you the size of each of these bolts without having to manually check it?

The photo isn't great, I took it from under the drivers side door pointing toward the fron of the car. I believe you should be able to see the bolt missing near the drive shaft. It might be tough to see, but that is part of the caliper

Hmmm, I just tested a 21mm socket on the passenger bolt that is still there and it was to big. It was a 12point socket though, but I would have guessed it would still show if it fit

Give a 19mm a try. I may have been mistaken.

I was off on a few things here. That picture is actually of the bracket. So I guess this bolt goes through the bracket and connects to the calliper. As you mentioned, it looks to be about 14mm diameter, but the socket needed to take it off is much larger. I actually got a 3/4ths socket to fit and was able to take it off with that.

The only problem so far is the 4 autoparts stores and dealer do not have it. Going to try and find someplace I can order it from now. Hopefully thT will fix my reversing problem. I have been way to slow on working on thise
