Hey Guys!I love this car, but this is driving me nuts. Any thoughts on a persistent 1320 code on a 2000 i30 with all the coils replaced. Bad new coil? OY!

Seems to run better and has more power with new coils.

Thanks Friends!Brit

Is it missing or running rough? If so, I would suspect a bad coil.

The diagnostic procedure for a P1320 can be found on page EC-378. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/2000/ec.pdf

Are you actually "clearing" the codes or just expecting the light to go out on its own?

It will be awhile till it goes out on its own. Maybe as long as 15 days of normal driving cycles or have the codes cleared.

If you're clearing the codes & it still happens, I would double check that you were not given the Mitsubishi style coils.

Actually it runs pretty good. More power with new coils. Every time I turn of the light with my OBD II scanner, it pops back on after I turn the car off them start it again.

Anyone try the cylinder balance test to try and find the bad coil? How is this done?

Thanks!Brit

I noticed your forum is from 2008, i was wondering if you still have the car since it is 2010 and did you do anything to fix the 1320?thanks

You should have posted in the Q45 forum and indicate the model year of your car. Aside from differences in the number of cylinders, some Maximas/I30s have ECM relay whereas there is none in the Y33-Q45. The coil base bias (Pin 3) from the ECM for the I30 is 0.20VDC while for the Y33-Q45 is 0.38VDC with engine at Idle.

Try cleaning the ground points of the main engine harness. In the Y33-Q45, they are mounted on top of the engine, near the oil dipstick. You can also check the ignition coil resistance - a 0 ohm reading across Pins 2 and 3 indicates a bad coil (short circuited base-emitter junction of the transistor inside the coil).
