Recently (15k ago) did a PS flush along with all other vehicle fluids. For the first time ever today my car malfunctioned since I bought it last year with 72k. It was a heartbreaking shatter of my mispercieved reality: my car is always perfect!

In any event, the power steering stutters when the car is first started and is not moving. I.e. backing out of a parking spot causes some sporadic PS and a screeching belt.

Anyone ever expierienced this on their 130k-ish y33?

I'm starting to feel like my $0 expense car is going to start costing me.

By 2009 I should have over 200k miles, with 130 done in just over 2 years.

Pulleys and belts?

Deferred maintenance will bite you hard when big parts or major systems fail.

I need to change them anyway. Just did a tensioner pulley on my Durango.

Hows the fluid and everything like that??? If the steering goes out with the belt screech, then check it.. Maybe for giggles tighten the belt a tiny bit.

Check the fluid for sure. Low fluid will cause lots of chattering.

Did tightening the belts take care of your problem?

My power steering (at least I think it is) started whining recently when the temperature dropped to around freezing, but I don't have any problems steering it. It just whines louder when I turn the wheel. After the car warms up it stops whining. My fluid levels are okay.

My husband stuck is head under the hood, but couldn't tell if it was a belt or something else not related to the power steering.

Any thoughts on what could be causing the whining would be great.

I changed all my belts a few weeks ago and the Pwr Steering belt was not quite tight enough. On a cold morning it would screech like mad at first, and then after it shut up, you could still feel the loss of hyd power in the steering wheel. I tightened that mother up and alls well.

Sometimes it's something simple.

Get a set of belts from Joe and be prepared to replace the 6 bearing assemblies in your pulleys with ones of equal or better quality (no Chinese ones!). Replacing only one or two means you will be back in again soon and after the second time labor will cost more than the replacing all the parts will the first time.

For the record, my car fixed itself and hasn't hiccuped since. 20k miles ago!

the power steering reservior on the y33 is the stupidest design, if the p/s flush was not done properly and a little air was allowed to go into the pump, it will cause a little noise and sporaddic action from steering. the reservior can look full but be bone dry on the suction side. there are two chambers in the reservior. when you fill the reservior, it will go in the outer chamber and will look full. fluid is sucked from the inner chamber and feeds the pump. it takes a few minutes for fluid to transfer from one chamber to the other. if any work is done to power steering and air gets into the pump, it usually takes me 45 minute to completely bleed the system. the system will eventually bleed all the air out but may take several weeks. in the meantime the customer will have to deal with noise and erratic power steering. it sounds like your veh had a little air and took a little while to completely bleed out.
