I've been doing my research before doing an overhaul of my audio system in my 2002 Maxima SE (w/ Bose) and this is a subject that's caused me some confusion since I'm seeing different dimensions in different places.

It seems all 5th gen models have 6.5" speakers in the front doors, but after a lot of searching via different sources, I'm led to believe that non-Bose models also have 6.5s in the rear, however Bose models have the smaller 5.25s... Is this correct? Anyone have personal experience changing the speakers over and can confirm?

And if this is correct, why would they make smaller rear speakers for the Bose model Maximas? Seems a little strange especially when the standard model seems to have the same size all around. Makes things more complicated for me when looking for speakers. Or is there enough space there to still make 6.5s work with some minor modification? Now that I think of it, why not if the standard model has 6.5s, unless the door panel is different on the Bose models... Anyway, some insight would be much appreciated.

Figured I'd do a follow up in case anyone is interested in the future and finds this with the search function.

So the rear speakers are indeed 5.25" on the Bose models. Now that I think of it, it makes sense that they're smaller than the fronts. Lots of people go on about not needing rear speakers at all since (as they say) sound is meant to be heard from the front (like a sound stage) and rear speakers just add unnatural noise pollution. Although lots of people will also disagree and say fill is very important, which is what you should be using rear speakers for. But you don't need (or even want) equal sound coming from behind you and therefore smaller speakers can fill in that gap nicely without competing too hard with the fronts. Adds a nice fill but stays more low key than equal sized speakers which might disrupt the balance a little.

So I guess in the Bose package they tried to optimize that to give the best sound rather than the standard model which is just four 6.5" speakers to keep it simple for production efficiency, I assume, rather than paying attention to how sound works.
