I just finished keying in all the records and receipts for my Q, going back to the day it rolled off the showroom. Took me a few hours, but here they are.

http://www.q45.org/irl1990.xls

The last owner spent $39k on the car (includes finance charges, tax, down payment, etc) and $23,000 on maintenance and repairs.

I spent $1300 on the car and about $400.

Wow.

The $400 on your part isn't bad at all, though. Don't upgrade to larger wheels if you'd like to keep it that low.

1998 was a very bad year....... the transmission failure at 90k is a little disconcerting. I am surprised that a japanese car didn't last any longer. I would expect that from an american car.

Nice work. I started keeping a record for my other cars and I don't like to look at it. By the way, if you want to show the entire contents of a cell without making the column really wide, you can selct 'format cell', then 'alignment' and check 'wrap text'.

My '92 Q had a trans failure at 55k, but at least that was early enough to be covered by the warranty. The factory replacement went on for another 160k (and is still going). I actually wouldnt expect it to happen to an American car, except maybe a pre-1998 Chrysler, because GM Hydramatics tend to be pretty durable. The Lexus guys are mating them to their turbo LS400s.

checksplay: Thanks!!

Actually, more jaw-dropping than the 1998 transmission failure was the need for eight new injectors at 24,000 miles. In 158,000 miles, it has had a total of 18 injectors.

That's amazing. My Q has over 80000 miles and I've never had to change an injector.

In 307,000 miles I've changed ZERO injectors, amazing you owners in weird gasoline areas don't pretest the product you assume is gasoline.

Or at least analyse and treat the product after you fill the tank to bring the hydrocarbon up to required quality.

"The Environmental Protection Agency failed to find the cause of thousands of clogged fuel injectors in Milwaukee cars after a four-month investigation."................besides the fuel.

Having reviewed my $21K spent over the same mileage ~158k, I noted I spent $1,000 for chain guides and $500 [for a gratuity] in getting a weakish transmission replaced and $1,000 for a 7 year/100k [extended service insurance policy]. Plus $270 in lunches and gifts....champagne, liquor, etc.

Most of the serious money was involved with a driveshaft, radiator, Spings, shocks [2 sets] and suspension members, plenum hoses, sunroof, and RUBBER ISOLATED COMPONENTS. Motor/PS rack/transmission, diff mounts

6 sets of tires [~~$3,000] plus 6 brake pads, 5 rotors, and 15 truings.

Some of the other Q replacements stand out:My 1st alternator lasted 235k. bearing noiseMy compressor/condensor lasted 235k. noiseMy HVAC fan lasted 255k. noiseStill oem starter, evaporator, ps pump, injectors, ecu, MAF, ignitors, engine.

How do we test our fuel? I usually use Sunoco or Moble. Does NJ have those weird gasoline?
