i recently installed a tomei 2 way lsd into my previously open differential casing. everything looked great when rotating it by hand and the gears seemed to intertwine pretty smoothly. when i went to take the car to a lot to break it in there is a strange clunking sound/feeling. This only occurs when pressing light throttle thru a turn. when giving it good throttle or while in neutral and turning this does not occur. after doing figures 8's and breaking it in, the feeling/sound significantly decreased but is still there during light throttle turning. im aware of the usual whining sound clutch typed lsd's make so i need some help determining what it could be. are the gears ingaging incorectly and what can i do to fix this? or is it possible that the rear wheels are skipping?

this is normal. All 2way lsds ive heard always have a bit of a clunk on low speed turns, depending on how well of a break in.

thanks a lot. i was hoping it was normal and i wouldnt have to pull the diff again, it was a pain until i realized i can take off the e-brake to rotate the axels to get to certain bolts i couldnt reach

One more thing, I have hardly noticed the whining sound talked about on other clutch diffs. I don't know how exagerated people make it out to be but I hardly ever hear mine and I have a gutted interior. This led me again to believe my diff wasn't engaging right. Its a tomei advanced trax with extra disc wich are supposed to make it queiter, but realy how quiet should it be

your problem could be excessive backlash on your ring gear. you also have to let the diff clutches soak in friction modifier before you install them in the carrier. clunk is not normal in any diff.

I drove a friends car with a 2 way cusco... sometimes it would make the biggest damn clunk when i would turn, like it wanted to hop the rear end around...but I asked the guys at the garage and they said that it has always done it... so who knows... I know the diff worked fine though.. hehe...

i drove around a little more today and noticed not only does it clunk some but while going slow my tires will squell a little in certain parking lots. and my lsd stil doesnt whine like other clutch types. my guess is that the diff is locked up. im gonna pull it out this weekend. its a brand new tomei unit so what can i do to get it to "unlock?"

no no no... that's normal.... I had a locked diff and it would do that.. the 1.5 and 2 ways will do that sometimes.. when you are making a turn and it sounds like you are grinding the gravel underneath your tires.. or if the pavement is nice and clean it will squeak... I love the sounds they make.. lets me know they are working!

if that's the case why don't I get the whining sound. I have a gutted interior and I finished taking out the tar today. Also before putting the diff in when you spin it by hand, both driveshafts spun, is that normal as well? if this is all normal couldn't I have gotten the same results from a welded diff and saved tons
