Anyone care to suggest a "good" 2-way Electronic Xover? Definately NOT AudioControl.

My system was 100% noise free. No background noise and definately not any engine noise. Install a AC 24Xs and I now have background hiss AND engine noise. Xover is grounded with the amp so I know that is not the problem.

Anyone have luck with the a/d/s product line of electronic Xovers?

I'll have to give this some thought ...

Audio Control's some of the best stuff out there, but if it's not working for you that doesn't really matter does it?

Are you working with a stereo shop or buying pieces here and there? If a shop, what advice are they offering?

Given any thought to matching the cross over brand to the amps?

Wow, all I did was ask questions .

The Xover was slightly used when I bought it. The 4Xs I have was new when I bought it (in '94 - lol), but the Monster cable RCA's I have are tight and pulled one of the RCA's off the board so I needed a replacement :rolleyes

The 24Xs has a grounding option that I have not looked at yet and it defaults at a floating ground. Ran out of daylight to open it back up so it will have to wait until tomorrow to see if that fixes the problem. I also have to change the freq chips if I can get the noise out since the previous owner had the sub set to 30hz.

I question the a/d/s Xovers since they would be a din-din connection to the a/d/s amp I have. Will probably be the next step if I can't cure the Audio Control unit.

It's weird. No Xover, no noise. I have tried all three internal ground selections and I still have noise. Take the Xover out of the equation and the system is clean (with a full-range sub)! Last stab will be to change the ground location this weekend.

I also may say "screw it" try and match a new Elec Xover with my a/d/s amp. Less RCA's that way as I can go din-din. I'm tired of the AudioControl Xover modules that are a pain to change and adjust too. Kinda miss the ease of adjustment my old Sony XEC1000 had. Unfortunately it injected "white noise" on my system way back then.

Sheesh.....If it aint one thing it's another...

Is it used or possibly got "bumped" around in shipping? At this point, I'd guess there's something internal that's loose, creating some ground noise.

Yeah, could be. I'll find out this weekend when I can spend some additional time with it.

So, it was the ground? Can you give us any info that we may learn from?

Was the original ground ...
  • not "bare" metal?
  • too close to another electronic (non-audio) device?
  • not common to the amp?
  • using a rust-proof coated screw?
  • too long?
  • etc

The a/d/s PH15 amp has two connections for power and ground in order to allow "daisy chaining" of equipment (I assume). The power and ground for the 24Xs was off those connections. I moved the ground to a connection near the cap ground. That solved the engine noise.

During that same time, I changed the sub-sonic filter from 33hz (factory chip setting in the 24Xs) to 18hz and my sub has finally come alive. I still need to change the high-pass from 90hz to 60hz in order to finalize the sub frequencies (no issues with the front speakers since I am using MusiComp passives). To make things easier during troubleshooting, I also removed the PAR-225.

The system is sounding 100% better and I was actually able to put it through it's paces a bit. I still need some equalization when switching from radio and CD, so the pre-amp will probably go back in tomorrow and I will finally install the Phantom Bass processor as well. Until today, I was pretty dejected over the overall install, but it is finally coming around.
