Well, within two days of owning my Q it's sparked a remarkable amount of problems for how easy I've been on it. The main one I'm concerned about is the transmission will not shift above second gear. In "1," it stays in first gear. In "2," it stays in second gear. In "3" and "D," it will stay in second until about 3000 RPM, sometimes it will simply stay in second, no matter how high it is revved up it will not shift, sometimes it will rev up freely (as if in neutral) until it hits 5-6000 RPM, then it will shift down to first gear. Not what I'd call healthy at 50 miles per hour. Unless I'm mistaken, it's not even supposed to be in first gear in drive. It did not have this problem when I test drove it but now it always happens. A problem I think might be related is the "TCS OFF" and "SLIP" lights are always lit up on my dashboard, and it will not let me turn the traction control on. Also did not happen during test drive.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Maybe you are the luckiest SOB and you bought a Q45 with a level ten transmission with a high stall speed torque convertor!

1.) How hard can you flog it in two days?

2.) Can you say toast?

Hard to give a good analysis without a complete service history and detailed description of fluid, circumstances under which fault occurs, etc.

I think you need to read the posts about transmission replacement. Sorry.

Why not search and find the diagnostic procedure for the transmission. What year? What does the fluid look like/low? Is the filter clogged/exchanger clogged? How can anyone even help without the most basic of info?

It's a 1992 Q with about 80k on the motor/transmission. Haven't checked the filter, I checked the fluid this morning and it looks brownish-purple, going to change that and see what happens then report back.

Not good, but not necessarily fatal. Search the board for flushes. Think the nearest BG machine is out near Tigard. Call first.

Don't just change it----flush it! If your radiator located heat exchanger is plugged (probably) then fluid will not circulate properly. If so, read up on posts about installing a transmission cooler. After you have proper fluid circulation, and have exchanged the fluid, do a pan drop (checking for debris etc... on the magnet) and filter change.
