I was trying to cheap/free little things I could do to get a little more speed out of my s13. Money doesn't come easy when you're 16 and work at McDonald's. The first thing that came to mind was weight reduction, and I thought about the backseat. I thought about if I took the backseat out and had some carpet laid in the back, and try to make it look like it came factory as a 2-seater. Has anyone else thought about, or done this? Does the backseat even weigh enough to really make a difference, and is it worth the trouble?

No...the backseat is foam, maybe weighs 6lbs...maybe 7 if you include the mounting hardware.

Vacuum the carpet REALLY well, you'll suck up more than 6lbs of dirt!

Good starting points: Remove spare tire and jack, get a lightweight battery (Hawker Genesis), etc...

Light wheels cost $$$, but are also a good choice.

I've found that there is a lot more space for people in the back with it out.

I really want to reduce wieght, but I also think it could look good with a little work back there. I also thought about maybe using that space a possible speaker box, though...

Well, a big sound system will really add wieght. The cheapest and most effective way to remove wieght is going to be a can or two of fix a flat and a plug kit in place of the spare. The BMW M Roadsters come this way because they don't have room for a spare due to the dual exhuast setup.

Also, corn has a point... the padded shelf makes it really hard to sit back there.

a speaker box will easily weigh more than the seats.

ive done an extensive amount of weight reduction, although i have no idea how much weight ive actually saved.

I know the sounds system would add weight, but I thought of that instead of taking up a good part of the trunk. All of the fabrication would be custome done my stepdad and I, with as much weight saving as possible.

Other than the spare tire, what are some other weight reduction ideas?

they sell a rear seat delete kit for 99-04 mustang's........so should be fine removing the backseats......as for weight reduction here http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=776885

usually accesories you do not use can give out some of that weight.

u got a coupe or a fastback? because either way i dont think anybody will sit back there, i'm 16 too but without the job part but either way you won't really save much weight even if you rip out your whole interior, but if you want to ballance it a bit more you should relocate your battery to the back and if you have a 89-90 you can remove your AIV that's supposed to give you a bit of more throttely response, at least from what i've heard.

You can lose the most amount of weight if you take off the dash and start pulling unused stuff and remove the fan/coil unit. Then remove the a/c compressor from the engine.

Then make a robot to drive the car instead of you, thats the biggest weight loss period.

removing your AIV will only help you if the reed valve has failed and you have exhaust backdraft going into the intake. Otherwise it is just a simplifying process for the engine.

If you don't carry around alot of people the f-it and pull the back seat. you can also pull the cruise control, if you have it, the dust shield on your rotors, the heat shields for the ehaust, and yes lighter non-steel wheels are definately a key. I have a 95 S14 and I just recently pulled the steering wheel for a Nismo one and the rest of the airbag crap boy is that stuff heavy, you don't have them I'm sure so sorry that's not an option 4 U!

a good upgrade with some money would be a ti exhaust you can shave off over 20lbs that a 3 inch catback ti weighs abot 10lbs. then all the cf stuff, cf seats, and get this "aftermarket shift knob" the stock one weighs a ton believe it or not lol. i tossed one at one of my friends balls.

i like my backseats its a lot funner driving with more people. even though they are really small. i mean in competitions or events i can just strip everythin goff, spare, seats etc but when im on the road whats the point? am i gonna street race? lol.

this would be a dream to me. imagine cf doors, hood, fenders, bumpers, plexiglass all over with a cf trunk? cf seats oh man stock seats are heavy, dump the carpet molding, if you wanna be cool titanium bolts/screws/nuts thats a lot of weight +it adds more strength to it, use spoon rims lol or volk racing magnesium run like 16 inch, dont do any brake upgrades it adds weight lol, carbon composite brake pads, im not too sure but synthetic should be less than vs regular oils too. s13 conversion its lighter and you can lose the flip light motor. dump the door locks and use poppers lol some weight there too, get the car repainted with lesser layers of base coat, replace any steel with alluminum if possible. cf drive shaft, and i think im out of ideas lol. ill have to look at a car with that much stuff to see what to do next. CA18 or SR20 lighter than the ka24.

ive seen this idea Drill holes under the interior shell of the carto shave a couple lbs. speed holes lol.

First of all, you're taking weight off teh wrong side of the car. Taking weight off the rear end will only make it more front heavy. If you wanna lighten the car correctly, lighten the front with a CF hood, lighter seats, etc to help get the 240 as clsoe to 50/50 weight distribution. BTW, I'd keep the seats if I were you.

I heard the pulling the car from inside and pulling all the noise dampener stuff (the black coating under the carpet) can drop like ~30 lbs if you get it all. Then you can put the carpet back.

There is a web site somewhere that I read about what you can take off your 240 and what it weighs. Things like heater, AC, windshield wiper motors, random nuts and bolts. I think it was something close to 200 lbs in extras. That would be like adding. . what, 2 hp? I drove my 240 around with no interior. I mean seat and steering wheel. It really does become quite loud with nothing to deadin the sound.

No, the formula ends up being 18 lbs - 1hp or something like that for our 240s.

well if ur looking for quicker ET's i think it comes out to for every 100lbs you knock off your weight, you take a .1 sec off your time

but then again the S13 base coupe has a curb weights of onlly 2760 lbs. I have a 92 coupe whose only power item is the steering wheel. Manual transmission, manual door locks, manual mirrors, manual climate control, sheez...if i had the option i would have put in manual seatbelts, but ARS was standard on all S13's so didnt have much of a choice on that one..
