my dad has a '72 240z. he is not a member and im not into the z's so neither of us know.

1. the car is a 4-speed inline 6. what 5-speed transmission can he bolt up to the original motor?

2. where can he find a gas tank for the car and roughly how much should he expect to pay?

thanks

first of all, I moved this to the classis ssection

as for the 5 speed, there were few available in the s30 chassis (70-78) only the 77-78 had the option of a factory 5 speed and it was a weak one at that, they simply added 5th gear to the 4 speed and the countershaft couldn't take the abuse so it borke, the dealer used to offer a kit to swap in the 5 speed from the roadsters, the most easy available is the S130 (79-83) 280ZX n/a 5 speed, the turbo 82-83 models were stronger but hard to find, either will bolt in but as I recall the shaft will have to be modified to fir the r180 diff in the earlier cars,, the n/a 5 speed will bolt right in and use the stock driveshaft, priced used range from $100-350

as for the gas tank, the best bet it to take it to a radiator shop have it cleaned and sealed, as far as I knwo there is no aftermarket units available, and 70-76 will go in with some re-arranging of hoses, the ideal units would be the 70-74, but even if you fina a used tank it shouls be cleaned and sealed prior to install, they tend to cost around $100 used of course your results may vary

is he planning on keeping the 2.4? still using the stock crappy su copy carbs? what are his plans for the car?

that was a ton of help, thanks so much.

my dad is a mopar guy. his plans for the datsun is just to have a decent car for my mom to drive. they both are 50 and this is the only car my dad has ever brought home that she liked so he just wants to put it back fairy close to original with the exception of some newer suspension components. its not going to be raced or showed so it doesnt have to be a speed demon or a trailer queen. just something my mom can sport around in on nice days.

i personally love the car besides being a little tight for my tall a$$, and besides the metal being so thin. the doors make you a little scared to get on an interstate lol.

any commom problems with these cars? anything to expect?all comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

im going to try to get my dad to register on here.

the engine's are damned near bullet proof, they have 7 main bearings (except the first few hundred cars made) all the L6's are completely inteerchangable, for N/A builds the flat top F54 block is the most desirable, it's a 2.8 found in the 81-83 N/A's coupled with the lower volume N42 non emision head with larger valves than the earlier E series heads, if you want to keep carbs look for a set from a 70-71 240Z 4 screw roundtop SU's, if you want to go injections, the later 82-83's are the best choice mainly due to not being as aged, if you want something that adds eprformance and dependabulity the tripple webber DCOE's (or similar mikuni, solex etc) can't be beat

the biggest problem is rust!, and if you plan on replacing springs and or struts, plan on buying spindle pins and the puller tool is a good idea as well (see zcarparts.com) the exterior sheetmetal is actually thicker than my Z32, there is less bracing in the 240s but I think they added it to all 72's and up

if you have any questions feel free to ask
