2 point ticket in NJ for "unsafe lane change," but the officer gave me "careless driving." I drive like a grandma, that's what my friends say. He claims I failed to signal, I signal in turning only lanes. It's such bulls***, but I wasn't going to argue with a cop, knowing I have friends and family that are cops in different states. Court appearance is not required. This is my first offense. Any suggestions? Pay the $85 ticket or pay the "no points" ticket that NJ allows up to three times per year? That can run me $500. The town it was in was Teaneck, NJ if that helps anyone.

Any non flammable suggestions would be nice. No rude comments please. I don't know what to do and money is running tight these days. I'm sure dangeris might have something to say hes t he man lol.

To make it Altima related.I was in the coupe!

Just saw this Thread Nightmare...

To be honest, you have to weight out the cost... I know it's bull$hit at times however, IMO, I'd just pay the ticket and be done with it.. I know you'd like to battle it out because it's a matter of principle but is it worth it for only $85? I don't think so. Just be more cognizant of using the turn signals from now on.

Good Luck Man...

Your a er haha

I didnt know NJ has no point tickets, wow they will do anything for money.

2 points isnt that bad but they can add up if you do something else wrong

If you have nothing to do go to court and try to get the points knocked off.

I agree...go if you can...just try to plead your case...Don't ever say it was unjust...just say you were stupid and didn't think you had to use it with no one around. If the freeway was packed and you didn't use it...then...I hate you and you deserved it, haha.

But, don't pay the no points unless this is your second ticket in a couple years...your insurance will remain the same with only 1 ticket, however if you get a second ticket be ready for a 150$-200$ hike in 6/months of insurance...speaking from experience

every state has non point tickets.. in nj i think its a 197.2 violation or something like that... ive had a bunch in my past.

A careless driving ticket will cost you on insurance and will be there for years...

Go to court, always go to court... $85 now, but it will add $100's to your insurance for a few years.

Am i missing something here.

I know there are tickets with no points. Moving violations with no points, like disregard for a posted traffic sign. Its like a 95 dollar fine for speeding, cops usually give this one out to girls, or people they feel bad for. i have never gotten it.

It sounds like there are 2 options here

1. 85 dollar ticket2. 500 for the same offense but no points - id say buying your freedom

In PA you dont have an option like this. i would have paid twice that to not lose my license for 4 months for speeding.

If it's not required but there's still a court date I suggest going to court anyway. Oftentimes they will offer a lesser charge to those who take the trouble to show up as a sign of good conscience. This will obviously vary from judge to judge, but if they don't offer anything you still have your initial two options of paying the ticket. In your case, I would go and hope that the judge reduces the ticket to a non-moving violation with the same ticket cost but no points.

Also regarding the side topic - I don't think that all states have "no points option" tickets. I know for sure that WI allows you to pay more and will reduce your point deduction but its only zeroed for the low tier tickets and not even an option if you are a repeat offender.

wtf???? you can pay for no points 3 times a year? in California you got to pay extra and take traffic school to clear the point BUT you can only do it once every 18 months (once every year and a half).... that sucks, wish cali did it 3 times a year, i'd have a perfect record lol

Pay the ticket, they take a defensive driving class which is cheaper than taking the plea bargain. It will save you money and will take the points of your license.

You can even take one online. Its easy and will save you with the insurance hassle.

Fight it! Careless driving is characterized by weaving in and out of traffic, following too closely, etc. Failure to signal should not be considered "careless driving". As long as all you did was fail to signal, fight it!!

What!!!??? Don't come to Canada, man! No such thing. You might get it beat down in court here (my only ticket in recent memory was reduced from four points to three points) but there is no such thing as 'buying your points back' here.

I agree with those who say that if you are clean now, just pay the $85 and live with the points. If you aren't clean, then either go to court and fight it, or pay the $500 if you are already in major point trouble.

im not sure but i think that in california you get 1 point when you do something because ive done a few things like speeding, reckless driving (with my Expedition lol), "red light violation" (made a right turn at a camera intersection without making a complete stop first) and everything has always been just 1 point and i think they erase the points every 3 years.... i have 2 points and 1 goes away next year and then the other the following year

well thanks everyone for the suggestions. I don't know if I'm going to pay the fine or go to court. I've obviously got a mixed response.

Ya we can't pay to have our points removed here in Cali, at least not that I know of. It's either pay the ticket or go to traffic school which in my case costed a bit more than the ticket.

Traffic school sucked though, I never want to go there again

I don't want to do the drivers thing because I here it gets rid of license points but not insurance points, so it's just a waste of hard earned money in the end of it all.
