First of all let me say that this a great site!

I recently purchased a 1996 Infiniti i30 from a dealer. My car is only under warranty for the next 2 weeks or so. The check engine light came on, so i brought it back to him and ran a scan on the computer and received 2 codes. The codes were p0600 (Serial Comm Link Malfunction) and p0136 (Oxygen sensor). He reset the computer and the light went away. I asked what the codes were and he said one was for the o2 sensor and the other was a generic code error caused by the first error. Does anyone know if that is true or not? Also....I am not a crafty mechanic by any means, I'm pretty illiterate about cars, but is the O2 sensor something I can change rather easily?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

O2 sensor is definitely something you can do yourself. Here's a how-to guide for replacing the one your code is indicating:zerothread/185155

Also, my source shows a p0600 as an Automatic Transmission Comminucation Line error.

And welcome to NICO.

thanks for getting back to me! So when a code is reset, and it doesnt come back, what does that mean? Is the car temporarily good? or is that warning gone forever? What I'm saying is if the check engne light DOESNT come back on, am I good to go?

Also, you stated that the p0600 was a different issue than i had, what does it mean? Thanks for your patience!

If the check engine light stays off, you may well be good to go. Keep an eye on your fuel milage if you're paranoid: if you see a noticable drop from normal, there's probably still a problem.

I'm not entirely sure what the p0600 error means, but I think it just indicates that the code scanner wasn't able to communicate with the transmission.

I would still have the dealer replace the O2 sensor since it showed a code. It may be a while (six months or one week) before it shows up again, but it will certainly come back. Utilize the warranty you were given, and have them replace it. Clearing the code is just the easy way out.
