I have a question....

Today I bought a 1992 Mazda Protege. I currently reside in Minnesota (where I bought the car). However, my drivers license is still a Georgia license. That is because I have a Sentra with GA tags. I also have a 210 with GA tags. ....ok, so let me kinda start over...

I have a 210 in GA with GA tags.I have a Sentra in MN with GA tags.My drivers license is from GA.My current address is in MN.My previous address (in GA) is still valid if I need it (my mom's house). My Sentra and 210 are insured in GA.I don't want to get a MN license and tags because I don't plan on living here for more than a couple months.I don't plan on moving back to GA either, so I don't want to keep everything in GA.

Today I bought a Mazda Protege. The title is currently blank because I don't know what address to put down. Can I get a MN title since I have a current MN address, even though my license is from GA? Or do I have to get a GA title? Or do I need to switch my Sentra and 210 tags to MN and get a MN license?

I would like to keep my Sentra and 210 registered in GA, with GA titles, and then get a MN title for my Protege, and register that in MN. Is that possible? Am I making the least bit of sense?

You are making just the least bit of sense. :D It's really all dependant on the state laws in GA and MN. That's all I have to say. Anything else would not be worthwhile.....

Okay, you twisted my arm.

Inspections can be done no matter the state, just so long as you're insured and have a valid DL. Valid is the operative word.

To title and register a vehicle, legally, you have to be a resident of the state in which you are receiving both.

Residence is not just dependent on where you call home but also it also carries a time limit. If you live in a certain state for a certain amount of time, usually 3 months, then you must have your license and registration transferred to that state, thus you have become a resident because to have your license transferred means you have a physical address within that state, so you MUST live there.

whew! That was a mouthful.

Now, if both GA and MN follow these laws, that means that you'll need to transfer your license and registration to MN before you move and then again after you move.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I, for one, am completely confused. I thought you were in Iowa? Why the hell would you buy a '92 Protege?

Ok, well, I can explain how it works now, because I went to the DMV today and asked a ton of questions, and now have a title for the Protege :)

Ok, the thing is, you can title a car in any state (well, according to the MN DMV) as long as you have an address to title it to. The problem is, now I have two cars with GA titles (Sentra and 210), a GA license, and a car with a MN title (Protege). So if I were to drive the Protege and get pulled over, I will get a ticket for not transfering my license. If I do transfer my license, and get pulled over in my Sentra, I get a ticket for not transfering my tags.

So I went ahead and titled it here in MN. The car doesn't run right now, so I don't have to worry about not getting a ticket. And if I drive it when I do get it running....then the insurance company told me to just say that I'm a student and have part time residence....as students get away with just about anything. He said even if I'm not enrolled (which I'm not), just say I am.

So it's kinda fishy, kinda half-way legit....but whatever.

Repo, I moved to MN like 2 weeks ago. I quit Afterdark. I bought a Protege because it only cost me $100 and will only cost about $250 to fix. Another $100 in tune up parts, and I'll have a good running $2000 car that I can sell.

Torry,I'd leave everything as/is. Most cops won't make a big deal out of it as long as your legit on all the registrations. Now 4-6 months after the date that you have registered that nay change.I'd see a warning first if anything.

:Werd

That's my plan....my tags on my Sentra expire in September. If I'm still here when that time comes, I'll switch my registration to MN. The 210 can stay registered in GA since it's imobile right now anyway. The Protege is currently insured in GA but has MN tags and title. They expire in November. But if I switch my Sentra to MN tags in September, I'll switch my Protege insurance to MN as well if I still have it then.
