What is causing this and is it a problem?

Welcome to NICO!

This is actually standard for the CVT to do - its a way of engine braking, this way if you were to have to stop, the car would be able to do so much easier. It helps with making sure the car doesn't gain to much momentum...

It's kind of like when you downshift in a manual on a hill to gain braking power...

But either way, it is normal operation for the CVT to do this, and nothing is wrong with the car.

Thats what I was thinking but I haven't owned a car past a 99 so I didn't really know what to think. Thanks for the great info. Just found this forum like an hour ago and my problem is solved. This is great.

You're welcome! Stick around too! There is a ton of information in here about your car, and all cars in general. Always feel free to ask!
