if you have an 05 altima, im pretty sure you have the owners manual too. check the manual it will tell you exactly what you need to run. looking thru some of the archives, im seeing that nissan recommended premium fuel for their engines... im sure you can get away with 89 or so. check the manual, its your best bet.

I have an Altima but it's a 94, not an 05, so that was why I was asking. Someone in my family is considering one and wanted to know. I know the 3.5 prefers premium like the one in my 02 Maxima does but I was not sure on the 2.5. This is someone that is considering a four cylinder four door car that's a decent size and they like the Altimas.

i believe 87 is recommended...i may be wrong but i think i read that in my fiance's manual (2003 2.5S) and it runs well, ive never noticed anything wrong with the way the engine runs on 87. ill check the manual again one of these days maybe and make sure...

I would be shocked if it doesn't require premium fuel cause I have the same motor in my Spec and it requires premium fuel in it.

And good to see you posting again Tony (long time no see).

Thanks for the info guys. I need to check further myself to see. I knew the Spec V's took premium but was never sure of the Altys.

Thanks Cory. I keep a full plate (not on purpose) so it makes it hard to do my message board rounds!

Tony,I can check my wife's Owner's Manual tonight for you and give you an email. I remember it saying 89 (midgrade) as the lowest grade to run in the QR25DE motor. Not sure if there is a difference between MY02 and MY05 but both cars are higher compression engines (9.5:1) and would probably benifit from mid to high grade octane fuels.bud

Tony,This is what the owner's manual says:"For 2.5L engine. Your vehicle is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) (Research octane number 91). However, for maximum vehicle performance, the use of unleaded premium gasoline is recommended."
