Evening folks! New to the forum, but after the last two hours of reading old posts and searching other threads, I feel right at home! :) I've got an EGR valve error code that is preventing me from getting my 01 Fronty inspected here in TX and it's been giving me fits today. I'm having trouble getting my manly hands in behind the engine to loosen two bolts holding the EGR valve on. I have no room to turn a wrench or swing a ratchet when I get socket on. I keep reading where folks cleaned or changed out the EGR and wanted to see about any advice on it. I'm going to be on it for day 2 tomorrow and want to make it as bang-bang of a job as I can. Appreciate the help folks.

I was able to make some time today to tackle this again, and while it didn’t go according to the service manual, I also ran into some issues and didn’t want to create problems. First off I couldn’t get one of the vacuum tube taken off. I tried a 10mm, 11mm, and 12mm flare wrench and could never get a good bite on it. This is where I started to deviate from the service manual. In an effort not round off the edges I decided to take the whole unit, and anything else I couldn’t remove without causing problems, off as a single assembly. Looking over the engine bay, I noted the following that was going to have to get removed:
1) O2 sensor on driver side
2) Tube connecting the EGR to the Exhaust manifold down pipe
3) Heat shield
4)Bracket holding the brake booster routing hose

The O2 sensor came out no problem, as did the exhaust gas tube going out to the down pipe. This was already somewhat loose and didn’t require a lot of effort to loosen up. Once I got it loose, I took it off with my fingers. I removed the half dozen or so bolts holding the heat shield on, these were torqued something fierce; nothing a 6pt socket and small breaker bar couldn’t get through. Next up was disconnecting the brake booster hose from it’s bracket mount. After I got that out of the way, I was able to sneak between the firewall with a 12 socket and get the two bolts holding the bracket on. Once that was out of the way I was able to lift up the EGR valve, mounting plate and exhaust tube.
I’m guessing now, but from the looks of it, the many cycles of heating and cooling (plus elements and engine washing) did a number on the bolts and nuts for this. Once off the vehicle I still couldn’t get a good bite on the vacuum tube nut, it’s bigger than a 10mm, smaller than a 12mm, but an 11mm won’t fit on it. I’ve gone over the assembly with some PB blaster to loosen up some of the rust and will take a small wire wheel to everything, either tonight or tomorrow, and see if I can get it loose. After looking over the unit, I didn’t feel a lot of carbon or soot build up. I gave a cursory spray of carb cleaner and not a lot of gunk came out. I’m going to put a vacuum on it and give it another shot of carb cleaner to see what comes out. At this point I’m contemplating just replacing the entire thing since I have it out and I don’t want to clean everything up and get it back together not to pass emissions again. Not to mention the rust build up of the unit. We’ll see, the cheapest I found is RockAuto at $89 so that is one thing holding me back, but it may be a small price to pay not to have to go back in. I'll post some pics up later on for those that are interested and for me to remember what things went where :)

Make the cel light go out by adding a 100k 1/4 watt ohm resistor to the egr temp sensor. Located in the center of the intake manifold...most nissans only have one sensor to monitor the egr system which is the egr temp sensor.. It reads incoming exhaust temps. If the temp is in the correct parameters its ok. if it is not it throws the light.. So when deleteing the egr or having a cel on u can bypass this with the resistor.. Making the ecu think the temp sensor is seeing the correct temp...
