Hey everyone, I recently upgraded the headlights/high beams in my J30. Not sure of the specs of the bulb, but they work alot nicer, they have a nice whitish/blue color to them, instead of the usually yellow headlight color. Anyway, they are new bulbs as of 2-3 months ago - and my driver's side headlight went out last night...

Now I'm going to yank both bulbs outs, and swap one in (pass side) that I know is good. If this doesn't light up, obviously I know its wiring...

Now questions:

1) Where is the wiring problem usually?

2) Does this wiring problem usually affect both the regular headlight, and the high beam, or just the regular headlight?

I'm dreading messing with the electrical in this car, and have seen many posts about this problem. The electrical in this J30 scares me haha. I was reading the FSM, electrical section - things get quite ugly!

Any info would be appreciated... I just want to know what I'm in store for! I doubt it's the bulb, being only two months old and all! Thanks.

Did you use the correct voltage on the bulb. J's are fussy when it comes to light bulbs and usually bulbs with too low or too much voltage screw up the J's electricals.

Most J' owners swear by Osram-Sylvania's Cool Blues, Xenarc or Silverstar bulbs. They seem to last the longest. Ensure that you buy the right voltage.

Would you not recommend these?

IF not, what are the brightest (while being safe for other drivers) bulbs that you recommend?

Enter your vehicle year and model and see what comes up for "Cool Blue". Just get that.

Osram-Sylvania's Cool Blues give off a Xenon type bluish hue that can be seen from a distance. There also illuminate the bulb better than any conventional bulb. The Silverstars give off a clean white light, kind of like the HIDs you see nowadays in high end luxury cars. They are alos better than conventional bulbs. You can see way down the road even in bad weather.

I got a pair of bulbs from a friend, they were the right type so we tossed them in a few months ago...

I checked it out yesterday, and they say 80W on them! DAMN! Waaay to much voltage!

Trying to decide between Silverstars, or Cool Blues - what do you run?

Any pictures of these bulbs installed in J30?

Mine are blueish now, not sure if it'll look better with just a clean white light?

Take a look at the link in my sig, pictures of the bulbs I have now!

Update: I swapped light bulbs from passenger --> driver, vice-versa...

The bulb worked for about 5min, then went out.

So this is a wiring problem, correct?

Most likely due to me putting those damn 80W bulbs in my J! I feel like such an ahole!

Going to grab a set of SIlverstar's after work - another $100 spent on the J! Damn, she's relentless!

Put your original bulbs back in there for a test.

If you still have the problem then it is likely the headlight relay, which is a common problem. If you can get it to come back on by changing several times from bright to dims or just pulling on the stalk to flash brights, then the relay is the problem. Pulling more amperage through the relay just makes a weak one fail.

If over heating your relay cause you are running too much voltage for the bulbs in the J is your problem. Run new wires with a new relay, Took me half an hour and $20 bucks, and my 80W bulbs never look brighter. Also, if you are look for blueish, white color. Silverstars may not be what you are looking for. Don't get me wrong, they look way better than regular halogen bulbs, they are only ~4000k Kelvinthe one on the left is silverstar and the one on the right is some 6000k bulb from a friend.

I installed the Silverstars today - not impressed at ll - going to return them!

Let me know ASAP, I'm driving around with one headlight, sucks if I get a ticket!

You can get those 6k color temp and even 8k color temp at your local "performance shop"

PIAA are supposedly the best bulb, but they are about 80 for a pair.

I had 80w hyper blue bulbs in my J, until the relay failed and the harness burned up. Then I was smart enough to install stock wattage bulbs.
