Hi, I just reached my 3 months on my 2008 versa with a very low mileage of 1700 miles. Nissan recomends to have my 1st service (3 Months or 3750 miles which ever comes first) and its gonna replace my oil filter and engine oil. Any Idea how this service could cost me? Appreciate any help. Thanks.

I'm not sure but normally overpriced. I never take my cars in for their schedule intervals except for the big ones like 30k, 60k, 90k. That's when it is mostly cost effective...unless the service schedule just says they will "inspect" and not replace.

I either do the service myself or take it to a oil change place.

That's what I'm thinking too. That is why I consult first here in the forum. I dont wanna do it by my self and i'm thinking maybe other bodyshop could give me cheaper cost in replacing engine oil and filter. Any Idea about the range of price it might take for my versa?. With my low mileage (1700) i guess I haven't reach my break in point. I still hope my MPG could reach 30 -34. Sad to say I'm only having 22 mpg.

1st maintainence costs around $40, second, around $75, third was around $200, so I decided to start taking my car to Jiffy Lube when I found out how much they charge. Im not paying $200 for a oil change, filter and top off all fluids. My car runs just fine with Jiffy Lube oil.

My dealer here in Austin gave me my first service trip at a great price of free!

Most selling dealers give you your first oil change for free and if you go to the new owners clinic some dealers have you get your second free, or like in my case after going to the new car clinic at the dealer I get my yearly State Inspections for free.

Free ? Thats awesome.. well how about the oil filter and the oil itself? you have to pay for that right? Do you mean the only free is the service and what about the oil filter and engine oil? how much does it normally cost?

My local Nissan dealership charges around $30 for an oil change. Seems kind of pricey for 4 1/8 quarts of oil, a filter, and possibly a new crush washer for the drain plug.

I do my own oil changes and save considerable money and to know it is done correctly. I could share a horror story about botched oil changes at a local Goodyear shop (Quail Springs Goodyear).

I am not sure you will save that much money taking it to a jiffy lube type of place. Maybe a few bucks, however, when these quick shops start checking and adding fluids, you have no idea, and they don't either, it they are using fluids (brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.) that is compatible with the vehicle, potentially causing more harm than good, all to save a buck or two. I am also not confident in the quality of oil or oil filters used at these shops.

If you are low mileage, switch to synthetic. Go to walmart, pickup a 5 qt jug of mobil 1 & have the dealer do the rest. You should get the oil change for about $25.

After that, ignore the months change interval & have your oil changed every 5,000 miles. You can do it your self, or bring the oil to the dealer.

A dealer ussually charges $70-150 for a synthetic change, but go to walmart and buy the 5 qt jug for $20-25. add the $25 from the dealer for labor and your looking at ~$50 every 9 months.

I haven't changed the oil in my Xterra for 15 months now, but have only put on ~4,000 miles since the last change. Synthetic oil doesn't age like dino oil.

Thanks for all your replies. However how safe is the synthetic oils for our engines? Anybody techy on engines here and describe the pros and cons?Should I wait for my mileage to reach at 3000 before I do my oil change? Shall it compromise my versa if I didn't change my engine oil and wait for 3000 miles?

taking a few minutes and using the "search" button will save you unlimited grief (and lots of unnecessary posts).

Synthetic is good.

Changing oil every couple of months won't hurt anything but your bank account.
