Does anyone know how extensive a job it is to replace timing chain set up in 1st gen q-45. Mine swallowed its chain with no warning at 138,000. Would it make more sense to replace engine with japanese take out engine?

Just wondering if you know about the damadge done to the motor while your timing chain dissapeared. Might just be worth it to grab another motor, and fix the chain guides while its out, and do some basic maintenance on the motor while its out.

Lots of previous posts on the subject of rehabilitatiig cherry-picked Japanese take-outs on the forum. The trick is finding a good early one.

Is your engine seized? Might get by with just a timing guide Oil pump chain repalecment.

^^ What he said.

I did it with no signifigant mechanical experience, but I ran into a couple of speedbumps along the way. It would have been much easier to do it with a Japanese takeout engine (which mine had, but the guides weren't done when it was put in). If you have the $$$ to spare to just get a new engine and replace all the parts before putting it in (including replacing the maintenance items on the engine), then it's well worth it to do so.

I agree... Thats whats making these cars a great buy.. EVEN if you can find one with trashed mechanicals, you can get an engine/transmission from JDM land and swap it in and have an instantly mechanically sound Q.
