Unfortunately that's correct, the motor is built into the column. Not actually a huge or complicated job as long as you mark and re-match positions carefully, but the column is expensive and you'll need to get the SAS calibrated after replacement. They fail rarely, so there's a good chance of getting a good JY unit. Before condemning the motor, check the heavy-duty contacts that supply power to it. Those motors draw a ton of juice, and it's not unheard of for a little corrosion to cause resistive heating and eventually too much resistance for the motor to run reliably.
