after reading many, many threads on the Q,s transmission and searching other sites on auto trans problems in general i've not found this particular prob, addressed. 1996 Qt, 107k miles, well cared for by infin dealer. trans flush @101k miles., trans cooler installed with a magnafine filter added. filled with chevron non-syn. occasionally the eng . revs a wee bit before hookup, even with a good warm up period. very solid hook up and all gears shift well, sometimes very smooth with easy acceleration and sometimes very firm under hard acceleration. is this the beginning of the end or could it be the tcu or perhaps under hood cable adj. ? or what?

thanx

What did the pan, filter (hard to tell without cutting apart and examining with a microscope) and magnetic bolt look like when you did the pan drop?

What was the condition of the old fluid? An other mechanical fluid exchanges and pan droop with filter replcements in the history?

Are you describing shifting into D or 3, or the 1-2 shift?

can't really say as to the filter, bolt, pan condition as i was not presen. i did however view a portion of the flush and the old fluid was certainly brown to dark brown. failed to mention in previous post that i added 1 bottle lube gard red to mix. i have recently sprayed the eng off after driving in some very dusty, sandy conditions. thought maybe i ''delubed'' a cam/cable. the shift i'm concerned with is say; reverse then to Dr., or sometimes after moderate to hard breaking to a complete stop, then acellerating again the eng. will rev a bit before it hooks up in 1st. gear. i really don't know to what rpm it revs, i'm looking ahead and not expecting it. the 2-3 shift problem i've read of doesn't concern me at this time. my 2-3 shift is more of a flat spot between the two with no eng. revs. total firm hook up when accellerating agressively. re-reading service history i find no mention of trans flush, only that all mileage sevice related items were performed. i do not know if infin specifies a trans-0flush at any time.

thanx, brian

infiniti doesnt recommend ANY transmission maintenance in the 96 owners manual, unless you tow or carry a rooftop carrier, only then they require a simple drain/fill at 60,000 miles! no mention of replacing BOTH filters or fluids under " normal" usage for the life of car! what a joke!

Yeah, try getting a service writer or tech to listen to you about it. They reply in official language - "Infiniti doesn't recommend changing the transmission filter." Of course, that wasn't what I asked. I asked if they would drop the pan and clean the filter.

The only symptom of impending transmission failure I've read about on NICO is a failure to go into reverse, which is pretty much failure already. Gotta mention the obvious - are you sure the fluid level is right-on? Shops have screwed that up more than once before.

yes the fluid level is correct and the color is as new. will lube the cable ends and cams. needs to be done anyway. probably just a coincidence that issue began the afternoon of eng. bay cleaning. or perhaps i forced some water into an electrical connection. waddaya think?
