Sometime when I'm at a full stop, like a red light, and I hit the clutch and shift into first, the transmission will grind(violently enough to send a shock up my arm) and then slip into gear. It doesnt happen all the time, only a few times a week, but its enough to be annoying. It does it whether the car is cold or warmed up. It does this when the car is at a complete stop with the clutch all the way down. If it was any other gear I would just assume its the syncros going bad, but supposedly first gear does not have a syncro.

I adjusted the clutch pedal so it starts to grab a little bit higher, thinking that it wasnt disengaging fully, but that didnt help. I also changed all the brake fluid in the lines and bled all the air out, but it has not helped.

Comments, suggestions, ideas?

Do you have to use force to put it into 1st?

It goes into gear with normal force, but grinds in the process. Like I said, only first gear does this, which is kinda stramge.

There is no synchro in 1st gear on the 240SX transmissions.

yeah, mine too, i have to slam her into 1st, had my clutch replaced a year ago, and just did a transmission flush with redline synthetic and lucas transmission treatment. Is there gear oil, or oil for te shifter unit (never took it apart). Reverse is a ****** to get into as well, at times.

There are no syncros on reverse and 1st gear... which is why they are hard to get into. Just let out the clutch a minor amount and it should pop into the gear.

That's interesting. That explains a lot of my troubles going into 1st gear... and I thought the syncro was going out.

So why aren't there any syncros on 1st or reverse?... I'm thinking its because the developers didn't want us to shift into 1st or Reverse while the car is moving.... unless there's a better reason.

It happened to me in reverse like two times. IT was because i was pulling the shifter too fast.

If you just pull(or push) it lightly and smoothly (like every motion in a car should be) it'll go in.

It goes into gear just fine, but has a horrible grinding getting in. This is not a 'syncronization' problem where it wont go into gear without rev-matching, like trying to shift into 1st when going 40mph.

when a car is at a stop and idleing. even though the clutch is in the trans will spin. the best way to avoid this is just prior to shifting it into first shift it into a higher gear just for a second. you dont need to let out on the clutch. all your doing is stopping the revolution of the trans. then shift to first gear it should slide right in. if you still have a problem after trying this check the condition and level of the fluid in the trans.
