So I am attempting to replace the rotors in my 99 QX4 and I went to loosen the lock washer to remove the hub and bearings and the screw stripped. Who decided to make these out of the softest metals known to man?

Any suggestions? I can't get it out and I'm feeling super discouraged.

Thanks!

mac, when things like that happen ,real ACE mechanics will use an Oxy-Acetylene torch , fine cutting flame spread - and "surgically" remove "things" . But sounds like your gonna need the spindle with bad threads "chased" ,better yet REPLACED too? I know that your problem does sound extreme , but the "screw" part is a little confusing to me , cause isn't it a big NUT there? If I'm way off- NEVER MIND. :lolling:

I think this picture might help illustrate what I'm talking about: https://imgur.com/a/RGDnNgO.

When I opened mine, I only had 1 screw and its stripped now.... Think I could drill it out?

mac, wow looks like that conglomeration needed to be smothered in like "Anti-seize" or something.Best that you got "similar"- "pictured" now!
Somebody who's done one before will come on back here and hopefully say SOMETHING.
never seen anything like that myself though to be honest.Just out of curiosity , what did you find this photo online? - why not a shot of your hub - with the one broken screw , as it is on your car to see? :yesnod

I think an extractor bit will work perfectly on that. The screw isn't on there very tight and should come out smoothly.

Give it a little spray and try an extractor -- my guess is it's not classic striping of threads ... rather rusting of same.

Fixing is all a question of condition when you get it apart. It's had 20 years of a harsh environment to contend with.

How bad did you strip it? Those types of screws should only be touched with a nice impact screwdriver and a proper bit. If that fails then next I would try a vice grips, and the 5% of the time that neither of those work then yes drill it out carefully, don't bother with the extractor until the screw is moving while drilling.

mac,hey man , gettin some good suggested help here , but I really think you ought to "snap" a shot of YOUR actual hub that SHOWS the BROKEN SCREW you say - so we can see it, HOW it's broken , you know. What's that a picture of tractor hub in junkyard , just with a similar setup ? Is that a picture of some other 1999 QX4 I mean? :gapteeth:

I actually was able to get them out with a hand impact driver and a hammer.

Now when I put my new rotors and pads from RockAuto on, the wheel won't spin    I can't figure this out...
