I have a 1999 qx4 with 80 miles. I have recently noticed shaking in the steering and maybe a problem with the shocks or struts (not sure what my car has to be honest)

One mechanic looked at it a while back and couldn't find anything wrong, but did acknowledge the steering shack. Do you know what this could be?

Please help I’m a single mom and I don’t want to get ripped off. Has anyone heard of this problem before? My regular mechanic wanted to charge me $150 just to tell me what was wrong....

The three most probable causes for steering wheel shake at highway speeds (60-70 MPH) are: A. worn wheel bearings B. out-of-balance tires C. improper steering rack sliding force

If you are indeeed having trouble with steering wheel shake at highway speeds (60-70 MPH), I would suggest looking over this technical manual which applies to '99-'01 model year Pathfinders and Infiniti QX4s: http://www.gwcustom.com/mirror/ITB00-049.pdf

However, if you are having trouble with steering wheel shake only when braking, it's most likely warped disc brake rotors. That's something completely different.

I have the same issues with my old bimmer. I've had the complete front/rear suspension looked at 2x already that its been at my mechanic. All suspension components are tight and look good. We ended up replacing control arm bushings up front. This helped a little.

Does your car pull to the left or right at all as well?? Mine has always pulled a little to the right. And then one day a couple weeks back I went down the street and my steering wheel was completely out of wack wobbly back and forth around 45mph. I have no bent rims, tires were rebalanced and aligned. Tie rods and bushing are all good. There brand new snow tires. Most of the time if I can get it past 60mph it is ok. Its so irritating though at 40-55mph because sometimes its worse than other times and it makes it pull even faster to the right.

Only other thing my mechanic came across was a "mildly loose" lower wheel bearing on the right front side. I highly doubt that is causing all the trouble! My last guess is my steering rack is crappin out considering the car has 166K miles on it. Steering is still tight and responsive though. If I had to replace my steering rack it will be close to $800 beause I have the 4WD model and this price is NOT the dealership...let me know how yours comes along and maybe I may have your similar problem!

Might also have the wheels rebalanced. Shouldn't cost more that $60 to have that done.
