1999 Q45 EGR Valve issues?

Hey guys, I have an Service Engine Soon light on in my '99 Q45. It has been on for about 60 to 90 days now. I need to get a California SMOG check asap so I need to deal with it.

Anyway, my buddy ran a scan on it and the code indicated that there was a fault in the EGR Valve. I have heard that the EGR Valve can sometimes get clogged or dirty and that cleaning it can often remedy the problem and stop the code from getting thrown.

I pulled my strut tower brace and the decorative cover off the engine. I can see the EGR Valve but how does it come off? I have searched for about an hour and don't see a DIY tutorial on that issue. Also, what is necessary to do the cleaning? What should I be looking for in terms of the clog or dirt?

After disconnecting the battery for a while (which I hope will clear the code after my repair) I should know fairly soon whether a new EGR Valve is needed or not I guess.

That will show you where the EGR is then from there if you are a DIYer you can see how to remove it.

But these cars were meant to see the dealer about the smallest things so if you have your doubts seek a pro or read the FSM and go from there.

And you might also want to use brake parts cleaner on the valve its self and a pipe cleaner for the tube that goes to it.

Ten to one your EGR tube in the plenum is clogged also. Impossible to clean with the plenum on.

Be sure you have all the gaskets, EGR, IAC, TB, plenum.
