Check and see if a wire is grounding in the trunk? You can trace the wiring schematics via the FSM.

You will need to trace through the diagram and look for bad connectors, worn spots, etc. If you have validated the brake pedal switch is fine then it has to be between there and the lights.

Page EL-58

- Battery connects to Fuse Block
- Fuse block connects to stop lamp switch pin 1
- When brake is depressed, pin 2 gets power

If brake is depressed then pin 2 R/G should become hot. When brake pedal is not pressed then pin 2 should not have any voltage. If pin 2 R/G is already hot without pressing the brake then the switch is bad. Per the diagram it looks like pin 2 powers the brake lights in the rear and the high stop.

If pin 2 of the switch is functioning properly then somewhere you have the R/G wire from pin 2 crossing with a live wire. You will need to trace from the brake lights back to the switch to try and find the problem.

There does not seem to be much in the way and it seems pretty straight forward. If you end up having to trace back to the switch it may be a pain in the butt but otherwise there is not that many components to the diagram.

What ended up being the problem? I have the same issue: The brake lights on my 1999 Altima will not go off. The rubber stopper is gone. However, when I manually push the brake light switch in, the brake lights still stay on. I shorted the plug that goes into the brake light switch and the lights STILL stay on. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

That's the wrong switch, you took off the cruise or shifter interlock switch. If you got to it from the UNDER the dash without removing any other parts, it's defiantly the wrong one. The brake switch is 2 inches to right of that one but you can't see it or get to it without dropping the steering column.
