1999 Maxima SE Transmission Problem

I own an 1999 Maxima SE with an automatic transmission. The problem first started when I would accelerate hard. It would just rev to red line and not catch. If I accelerated slowly it would shift fine.

Now once I put it into drive it wont shift past 1st. From my experience I think it is the torque converter. But from what I have been reading, I could be wrong. I replaced all the transmission fluid with new fluid and also replaced the filter.

Has anyone who has dealt with this problem before give me a little advice on what they think the problem might be? I am to the point where I just may swap the trans axle for a used known good one.

I had a very similar problem except the transmission would slip in third gear. When I took it to the shop I was told it needed to be rebuilt. After the rebuild it runs fine.
