I drive a 99 maxima 5-speed and during normal driving it drives fine. If I try to pass someone or just under a heavy load it hesitates really bad as if all power has been cut in half. I've been researching and come up with a bad coil pack but I don't have a code? I did the check it yourself method with unplugging one at a time to see if your engine doesn't react with one of them (the bad one) but my engine reacts with all of them as if none are bad.

Also if I let me car sit for a lil while and try to crank it up, it will start then die by itself. If I try to crank it up again it starts right up as if nothing had happended. Could that be resulting from the problem above or something simple like a loose battery connection or something like that.

Sounds like an AFM problem, need to hookup in a scantool & check ALPHA readings to make sure. You can visually inspect it, maybe it's dirty w/ lint. If it's pinging, possible coil packs intermittently failing.

I think I figured out what was wrong with it. I changed the spark plugs yesterday with new NGK plugs and it ran a tad bit better. I put a new aftermarket mass air flow sensor on it last week and it didn't really seem to help so today I put my old one back on because I never had a check engine light come on the whole time it was messing up. As soon as I cranked it up after putting my old sensor on, I notice a HUGE different in how it idled and ran. I guess it was a combination of old worn sparkplugs and a crappy "new" aftermarket mass air flow sensor.

Coil packs are tricky. I had a bad one once but it operated fine on thehighway but would miss at idle (at a light). They are relatively easyto multimeter per the Haynes book.

How exactly do you check it with a multimeter? I've never had to check a coil pack using one so I wouldn't know what setting to have it on or anything. I've tried searching how to do this (first maxima I've owned so I have no idea how to repair it) but can never find a good description.

The Haynes manual will detail which pins on the coil pack you needto probe with the positive and negative leads of the multimeter.Basically you will check resistance and voltage. Check resistance withoutthe key turned on-check voltage with the key on. You have to bevery careful checking voltage since you are running power throughthe multimeter. The multimeter will have a switch to turn to and chekvoltage or resistance.
