Hello all,

Recently purchased a 1999 I30 with 70,000km. I consistently notice a slight jerk as I am about to come to a complete stop and the car's speed has reduced to about 10km/h.

Infiniti dealership mechanic told me that the jerk I was experiencing was a normal downshift, and that the computer showed no problems with regard to transmission function. Transmission fluid looked clean.

Since this is the only I30 I've driven, I'm not sure if what I am experiencing is "normal" for the car. However, I can definitely say that this apparent downshift before coming to a stop is more noticable in the I30 than any other car I've driven.

Please let me know if anyone has experienced a similar occurence with their vehicle and any suggestions as to the possible cause and remedy to this "problem" will be very much welcome! Thanks in advance!

I have a '91 M30. I have had a similar problem. When you are coming to a stop, at about 7 or 8 mph it shakes and then smothes out prior to stopping. I took mine to a local transmission shop where they rebuilt the entire transmission for about $3,000. When I picked it up and drove it, it had the same "lugging" on stopping. I went around the block and went back to the transmission shop and told them of the problem. They have some sort of laptop computer that the hook up under the dash that tells what the transmission is doing. When we accelerated, it went 1,2,3 and 4 (eventhough it shifted late in first). When we began breaking, the computer showed that it downshifted 4,3 and around 7 or 8 mph it "lugged/shook" skipped 2nd gear and then shifted to 1st. The technician said that it was skipping 2nd gear on downshifting and that was causing the shake on stopping. Since they have replaced everything in the transmission he said that it was not a mechanical problem but an electrical one. We then replaced the TCU (transmission computer unit) and that made no difference at all. I am going to post a new thread about this now.M30TOBY

Thanks for your input, M30TOBY.

I had actually read your posting before posting my own. The symptoms you describe sound very similar to the one I'm experiencing, and I'm wondering if it could be same problem. However, when the Infiniti technician hooked up the computer to the car, he found no problem with the transmission. The dealership showed me the actual printout of the computer report showing no problems found. I think I'm going to bring it to another Infiniti dealer for a second opinion.

As a side note, I also find that upshifts from 1st to 2nd gear a little more abrupt than what I think it "should" be for a car of its class.
