I have a question about the passenger side door lock on my 1999 Inifiniti I30. I believe this is a shared component with the Nissan Maxima of the same year.

My front passenger side door does not always lock. When I have the problem, I have noticed that the lock /unlock indicator tab (which is a chrome flip out in the lateral door surface, not a pop up) does not go all the way flat, but is left slightly out (between 1/8-1/4 inch). This door locks about half of the time, and doesnt half of the time. This is not an electrical problem, as the lock does work every time. When the tab does not go all the way flat, the door will open when the outside handle is pulled, even though the other doors are locked and the alarm is armed.

Is this a part that I can lube or adjust without taking apart the door? Is there possibly a wear issue where a part needs to be replaced?

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

It would be better to remove the door trim and observe the the lock/unlock operation. You have to temporarily reconnect the power window control assy for the electrical lock/unlock to work, with the door trim removed. Below is a procedure on how to remove the door trim

I30 Door Trim Removal:Parts Required: Common blade screw driver (small and medium size), Philip screw driver and cloth or duct tape to cover the tip of a common blade screw driver. CAUTION 1: Always use a cloth-covered (or duct tape- covered) screw driver to pry off components to prevent damage to component and/or car paint.CAUTION 2: Pay attention to the location of the hook for each assembly. Always pry off the component on the opposite side of the hook location. Otherwise, the hook may be damaged.1. Remove inside door handle escutcheon-The escutcheon is secured by hook at the back and 2 pawls on each side towards the front. Use a cloth-covered common-blade screw driver and pry off the escutcheon from its lower front side. Do not pry off from the back as it could damage the hook.2. Remove power window switch assembly.-Front Door: The switch assembly is secured by a hook at the back, pawls on the side and metal clip in front. Pry off the switch assembly from the front-side. Disconnect electrical connector.- Rear Door: The switch assembly is secured by a hook in front and a metal clip at the back. Pry off the switch assembly from the rear-end. Disconnect electrical connector.3. Remove pull handle.-The door pull handle is secured by a single Philips screw. Look down at the bottom of the door pull handle and pry off the small circular tab to expose the screw. Remove the screw with a Philips screw driver.4. Remove step lamp – front door ONLY-Pry off the lens with a small screw driver. Remove the two Philips screw securing the lamp assembly. Remove the step lamp and disconnect electrical connector.5. Remove door trim screws (2 ea.) – front door ONLY-Remove the 2 Philips screw at the bottom of the door trim.6. Remove door trim-Multiple clips secure the door trim to the door panel. Pull out the door trim (by hand or in combination with a screw driver) from the bottom (going up) then lift off the door trim. Disconnect harness connectors. Remove the door trim.

Take note of all the electrical connectors that were disconnected. Ensure all connectors are reconnected during door trim installation

Loystock,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to not have to disassemble the door panel since I haven't ever done something of the sort, but it seems easy enough.

Thanks,neel2004
