1999 g20 a/c car problem

i have a 1999 g20 and everytime i turn the a/c on the car shuts off... if im driving and turn it on it stays on but it feels like it drains power from the car... what could be the problem how do i fix it???

You could have a bad compressor that is binding up/partially seized. Does the belt squeal at all when you turn it on? I'd inspect the belt for wear.
