My rear suspension is very noisy over a bad road surface. Sort of crashes and bangs. It is the original hardware and I have 85,000 miles on it. I realize I need to replace some parts but would like some advice on what to focus on first.

When I look at the bottom of the strut, the bushing looks worn to me as there is a noticeable clearance between metal and rubber. Can I replace these bushings or are they part of a lower link or other part?

I cannot say anything about the bushings as my 85k 97' was not worn, but for sure my shocks in the rear were totally history. I replaced them with KYB SR Specials which unfortunatley cannot be sourced locally without an order from folks on this board. At the very least get some Touring shocks and springs, at best get some lowering springs, KYB SR Specials from OneTonGarage (search for him on this board) and upgrade and replace anything that is history.....not sure what was history on my 97' but I think you noise is probably from worn shocks.

you can replace the bushing, theres a PN from nissan, however you gotta take the whole spindle out and press the bushing in....

wes, what about a bench vice? You think this would be sufficient?

sorry for the dumb question but how did you determine the shocks were bad. Mine seem ok on the bounce test which I realize is not a very accurate test. The car doesn't bounce up and down its just that the suspension is really noisy when say a rear wheel falls into a pot hole. This is my sons car and my own 2000 anniversary edition is much quieter on the same stretch of road so I know there is a problem.

I stand partially corrected by myself.. It appareas the rear struts are similar in design to the front Q struts..... IT appears theres a bushing integral with the shock instead of the bushing being in the suspension.. maybe just replacing that shock will help, but personally id do both rear ones so it doesnt handle unevenly.

The biggest reason I knew they were shot is they were leading oil in a big way, both were bleeding...plus the car just didn't handle the way it did before, on long sweeping turns it sort of bouned and just didn't feel right.

The KYB SR Specials are well Special, they rock. You should try to get set if you can, they transform the car into another level.

Same here, I think I'll head to Nashua. Never been there but it seems to be the closest.

I'm not really sure what I would bring my car to an Infiniti place for....having the closest dealership 2 hours away has helped me make mechanic friends locally. What would you guys 2 hours away for to have Inifniti specifically work on? That's not a rhetorical question.
